Brief
history of the Band
Five by Five
are based in the Fife/Dundee/Angus
areas of Eastern Scotland. Although the band was only formed with its
present line up in late in 2007, its members have widespread experience
and the band’s genesis goes back over 10 years. Rod (Drums + vocals)),
Ian (Bass) and Rob (Guitar + vocals)) played together for many years in
Backshift
(in its various guises) gigging widely around the region. Eventual Backshift
reached the end of the road (with founder-member John going off to form
Mr Spider). Graham
(Guitar + vocals) joined as part of a major re-direction that gigged very
successfully - but sadly very briefly - as Second Nature during 2003/4
before the usual euphemistic musical differences brought the project to
a juddering halt. Anne (Vocals) – who had previously fronted a soft-rock
band in the North of England - joined in 2004/5 and Five
by Five was born. Rab (Keyboards) dusted off his keys
after a long period away from the local band scene and joined (albeit
briefly) in late 2005. Graham then left and John (Guitar) joined in 2007.

The
name Five
by Five is pretty cheesy but you try getting agreement
between five or more strong personalities. The name derives from
a number of sources: we were five in Backshift and after many changes
we end up back as Five; there are Five (5) members of the band each
with five (5) fingers playing across the five (5) staves of sheet
music (so that should be 5 x 5 x 5 but the arithmetic gets too complicated);
and so on. Well you did ask! |
